Walking from Darkeness to Light

A Course in Miracles teaches that when we are weary or in pain it is because we have done it to ourselves. We know this because unless we have done it to ourselves, pain in any way would be impossible because it is not what God Wills for us. In fact, God would not have us suffer in anyway because pain is not of Him and He cannot create anything unlike Himself.

So why do we cause ourselves to suffer? After all, no sane person really wants to experience pain and hurt. The truth is we don’t consciously know why we cause ourselves to suffer because we are choosing it at such a deep sub-conscious level. This subconscious level of desire for pain is buried so deep in a part of our minds that it is completely hidden from our awareness.

This part of our minds termed the “ego” in modern psychology made a decision possibly millions of years ago in our spiritual evolution that it wanted to be separate from the Wholeness of our Universal Source and so it split off (it actually shattered).

As a result of this “tiny mad idea” another false idea stemmed: Guilt. This subconscious guilt and innate sense of unworthiness is so great in our minds, it believes it ultimately deserves to be punished by God (which is impossible), thus the cycle of self-inflicted pain and suffering began…

Each and every day we walk with these “dark companions.” Usually they remain hidden until we mentally project them onto some unsuspecting bystander(s) such as a spouse, relative, boss or even race of people or political party; then suddenly we see them glaring back at us, seemingly outside of our own making waiting like a thief in the night to attack us, or force us to do something against our will.

“I would never bring something like this on myself” we groan. We find comfort in our dark thoughts and feelings as we blame the other, the world, or yes, even God. We wander homeless, friendless, lonely, afraid, ill, depressed and confused. Still, we hold on to these false ideas and fantasies about people, events and circumstances that are based on judgements, unforgiving thoughts and past experiences that justify and validate our unhappiness.

Yet, if we only knew what God’s true Will is for us our joy would be complete! Our secret (and not so secret) dark thoughts and feelings would melt into Light so bright and rich that nothing would ever again disturb our peace. This bleak little world will simply vanish into nothingness, and our hearts would be so filled with joy that it would leap into Heaven, and into the very Presence of God.

The good news is the Course teaches that this amazing healed state of mind is not only possible but guaranteed. It is our true nature, we have simply forgotten. However we cannot remember on our own. We need help. This help is given us in the form of a small, quiet Inner Voice that speaks to us day and night when we are willing to listen. A tender Comforter that whispers softly in our ear telling us of the peace, love and joy we long to remember.

This Voice tells us the way to remembrance is not hard, but it is very different. To walk this way we must be willing to leave behind our dark companions and allow our thoughts and feelings to be transformed by the power of our Inner Teacher. This is the choice we must make for what is unlike God cannot enter His Mind.

Once we make this firm commitment to be a pure temple (mind and heart), the Light of Truth will dispel all that is not real (illusion) and darkness will disappear forever. As we make this final blessed journey from darkness to Light we do not make it alone. We make it for everyone because all are blessed as we choose to change our own minds. So make the choice today to walk in the Light dear friends, the Kingdom of God is within you!

Namaste’
